We examined the relationship between Openness to Experience and everyday behavior, separately for men and women. Target behaviors were selected to represent different areas of personal and social expression in which Openness is expected to be conveyed. Correlations were strongest between total Openness and artistic and intellectual interests. There were significant gender differences for both trait and behavior measures; however, most differences were small in size. Gender differences indicated that women, compared to men, are more open to feelings, and engage in more self-expressive behaviors and behaviors indicating close friendships. The relationship between some behavior measures and Openness differed for men and women, suggesting that the two genders are not equally likely to express Openness in the same contexts.
